“ Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard”

“ Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” was written by Thomas Gray on the occasion of the death of his close friend Richard West. “The Elegy” is an example of classical poetry for its perfection of style, dignity and solemn tone. However in his poem the poet anticipates Romanticism. The melancholy mood, contemplation of death and Gothic setting are elements of the poetry of the Romantics. It is a type of poem containing stanzas formed of four lines with alternate rhymes. This poem deals with the theme of death. All men are equal in the presence of death. According to the poet, seemingly untalented people could have achieved great things if they had been born in other circumstances. However it isn’t necessary for poor people to be ambitious and grandiose: Ambition and Grandeur are useless because “the paths of glory lead but to the grave”. All men are destined to die. I enjoyed this poem because the poet recognizes the worth and potential of poor people. However, unlike the poet, I think that ambition and grandeur are useful and spur men to be at their best and to improve their living conditions. This poem inspired Ugo Foscolo who wrote a solemn lyrical composition entitled “I Sepolcri”.

E' un tipo di poema che contiene strofe formate da quattro versi con rima alternata . Questo poema tratta il tema della morte . Tutti gli uomini sono uguali davanti alla morte . Secondo il poeta , persone apparentemente prive di talento avrebbero potuto compiere grandi cose se fossero nate in altre circostanze . Tuttavia non è necessario per la povera gente essere ambiziosa e grandiosa : Ambizione e Grandezza sono inutili perché " i sentieri della gloria conducono al sepolcro" . Tutti gli uomini sono destinati a morire . Questo poema mi è piaciuto perché il poeta riconosce il valore e le potenzialità della povera gente. Tuttavia , a differenza del poeta , penso che l'ambizione e la grandezza siano utili e stimolino gli uomini a dare il meglio di sé e a migliorare le proprie condizioni di vita . Questo poema ha ispirato Ugo Foscolo che ha scritto un carme intitolato " I Sepolcri " .
